    Half Plates

    created by DagsBricks on 2012.02.21

    Main Section
I have found myself on occasion wanting to attach pieces without increasing the height of the assembly. I am primarily a micro builder, therefore the height of one plate can matter significantly. On other occasions I find that I want to give a surface a flat look without increasing the height through the use of tiles.

This proposal is for plates of a height half that of a normal plate. A normal plate is 3.2mm high. These pieces are 1.6mm high. Several other LEGO elements are 1.6mm in dimension as well such as bracket parts and panel walls. Baseplates are also 1.6mm high (not including studs).

The pieces can be used to attach parts together without increasing the height of the assembly. In this example, two 2x4 plates are placed in a T pattern. The half plates are then placed on top to connect the assembly without increasing the height. Since studs are 1.8mm, there is still a slight height difference across the surface. But really, 0.2mm can be forgivable.

Another way to use these plates is to achieve SNOT building. However some extra care should be taken since half plate offsets can present an additional challenge.

Bracket parts can be connected in some new ways. The 2x4 plate on top fits perfectly!

Other sizes of half plates are obviously possible, I just didn't want to clutter up the picture. I imagine 1, 2, and 4 studs wide and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 studs long at least. Corners could be rounded or angled. Or perhaps LEGO manufactures these in 16x16 sheets and you could cut to size. Purists, don't balk. You snip string and pneumatic hoses, don't you?

Completely compatible with technic too. Four slip over one side of a pin. Hmm... Almost looks like an erector set...
