    Logging Crew

    Main Section
    The idea here is to create a new theme focused on logging operations (somewhat aligned with the recent City "Forest Police/Fire" theme). What I have shown here is a representative set with two logging machines, a skidder and a forwarder, plus some lumberjack minifigs and logs to play with.

    The vehicles are created approximately in the City scale. The base chassis is 6 studs wide on each, but the big tires extend the width out to 10 studs. Both vehicles have several working functions. I have liberally mixed in Technic parts, because using them is the only way to get the functionality and strength that I was looking for.

    The skidder (loosely based on the Caterpiller 545C) has articulated steering and a pendular front suspension. The decking blade in the front can be raised and lowered. The grapple boom in the rear is completely articulate as well -- the upper and lower arms can both be moved, the grapple can be swung in any direction, and the grapple tongs can be opened and closed.

    The forwarder (loosely based on the Caterpiller 584 8WD model) also has articulated steering, as well as full pendular suspension (each pair of tires sits on a tilting bogie). The crane is completely articulate -- the base can rotate, both arms can be positioned, the grapple can swing and rotate freely, and the grapple tongs can be opened and closed. Below are pictures of the real Cat 584 and the one I created for this theme.

    If this theme were to become popular, there are numerous possible additional sets that could be created -- a log handler, a harvester, a tracked skidder, an Erickson AirCrane helicopter configured for aerial logging operations, a logging truck, and a lumber mill. You could even include a few snowy owls and some angry minifigs from the Sierra Club :-).
