"To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past, and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world." - Walt Disney's Dedication Speech , July 17, 1955
This model is a recreation of one of Disney's most famous buildings as well as a popular icon of The Walt Disney Company: Sleeping Beauty Castle. This is the oldest Disney park castle because it opened on July 17, 1955 along with the rest of the original Disneyland park in Anaheim, California.
Fun Fact: This castle has always been known as Sleeping Beauty Castle even though Disneyland opened in 1955 and Disney's animated film "Sleeping Beauty" premiered in 1959! Although the real castle is only 77 feet high, the illusion of forced perspective was used so that it would appear taller. This process is made possible through making the elements that make up the foundation larger than the top towers (which are made smaller). Another little known fact is that the Disney Family Crest was built into the castle just above the gateway where you walk in through the castle to get into Fantasyland from the front.
Here is the castle with a night background. Behind the castle is a Mickey Mouse firework like they have in the real fireworks show. Walt Disney once said, "I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse." For anyone who has ever enjoyed the timeless tradition of watching the Disneyland fireworks shows, this Mickey-shaped firework represents nostalgia and happiness of the young at heart.
Here is a picture of the real castle that I used as a reference picture. As I built this model, I kept looking at this picture to make sure I got all of the details in and to make sure everything looked right. I don't know how much this set will cost, but I'm guessing probably between $50 and $200.
I hope you enjoyed looking at this model because it is honestly my favorite project so far!
