    LEGO Bird Project

    created by DeTomaso on 2012.05.14

Love LEGO? Love Birds? Love LEGO Birds.

    Update: 17/12/2013

Due to the new CUUSOO terms of service I have had to change the idea behind my project.

I think it would be a great shame and an anticlimax for all of my dedicated fans and supporters if there was only one bird in a set from the dozens I have built so far for this project.

So I now suggest a set of three or four recognisable birds from around the world.

Below I have listed three small birds that came top in a recent supporter vote. I think these could easily be recreated by LEGO's professional builders.

    Bobby The Robin Red Breast
    Bradley the Blue Jay
    Victor The Violet-eared Hummingbird

These three birds are well recognised around the world and would allow a larger target market as there is one European bird, one North American bird and a tropical bird.

In an ideal world I would like each bird to have a perch and a little plaque with information about the specific bird. I think it would be a bonus to have a soundbrick somewhere in the build with the relevant birds song or call.

If there are any concerns that LEGO CUUSOO have with creating multiple birds in one set and we have to choose just one then Bobby the Robin Red Breast would be my choice. He was the first bird I built and the inspiration behind this whole project. He is also one of the worlds most recognised small birds. If LEGO CUUSOO think that they could create a set using a different bird from my substantial collection then I would be happy for them to use one of these.

After all of the effort I have put into this project I really want it to pass the review stage so I am quite flexible with what the final set would consist of, the above are suggestions as to what I think would work best.

I find birds a great subject to build with LEGO and I'm sure from the great response I have had on this project that thousands of other people would too.

I also think that if these birds were turned into official sets they would be inspirational to both children and adults and would be a great gift for anybody. They would sell very well in zoos, museums, wildlife centres, and of course the LEGO store.

I really enjoy matching the different colours and features of our beautiful feathered friends and I hope that one day anybody else can have the chance to build their own bird from LEGO.

To see the birds I've built so far in more detail click on their name, but please don't forget to support the project before you go elsewhere. Once you've supported please re check my page to see if you are actually "supporting" the project.

    • Thanks to LEGO fans like you, this project has received enough votes to qualify for the LEGO Review.

Now that this project has reached 10,000 supporters, comments are closed.

You can find updates about the project's journey through the LEGO Review on the Official LEGO Comments tab.

    Congratulations on 10,000 supporters, DeTomaso!

Congratulations on reaching 10,000 supporters for the LEGO Bird Project. It's been quite the journey, are your arms wings tired yet?

Thanks for focusing your project on just a few of your iconic bird designs, to fit within what we're able to produce as a single LEGO set. We'll evaluate your models as you have prioritized them, and see what might be possible.

We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

    What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A "LEGO Review Board" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The LEGO Review Begins in May
This project qualifies for the Second 2014 Review beginning in May and ending in September. For more information about the LEGO review process, see this knowledge base article.

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a "go/no go" decision to develop and sell a product based on the LEGO Bird Project concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.

We will post follow-up information and our decision here.

    The LEGO CUUSOO Team

    Congratulations on 5,000 Supporters!

It's rare to see a project that not only looks fun to build but also has huge display appeal! I think even the craftiest feline would be fooled by the beauty of these birds. It's clear this is a project you feel passionately about, and therefore have invested much time in the idea and construction.

Remember that LEGO CUUSOO is set up to produce individual sets. Since you suggest a “series” of products, you may want to consider which model is your priority for being produced. Otherwise we would like the liberty to choose the model from your list of suggested options. Check out #6 on the post Cheat Sheet: How to Pass the LEGO Review with Flying Colors.

Best wishes as you continue your journey to 10,000 supporters!

    The LEGO CUUSOO Team

    Congratulations on 1,000+ Supporters!

Are you sure these aren't real birds? You capture the shape and the look of each breed so well with LEGO bricks. Congratulations on gaining so many supporters right out the gate. We love this project because not only is your work so good, it's a new concept and an area we aren't focusing on right now.

Keep going for the supporters. Good luck on your journey to 10,000!

    The LEGO CUUSOO Team

Note: If your idea is selected, the LEGO Group will make the final decision on how your proposed product should be produced, the final design, applicable licenses, production run size, sales channels, etc. Please understand that our comments here do not have an effect on the LEGO Review that will take place if the project reaches 10,000 supporters.
