    the Rhinoceros by Theo Jansen

    created by kvanb on 2012.05.19

    Main Section
    Hello everyone!

Theo Jansen is a Dutch Kinetic Artist and famous around the world for his Strandbeests Theo is also my friend and colleague, and I'm happy to say he likes and supports this scale model of one of his nicest sculptures, the Rhinoceros.

It's built close to the proportions of Theo's beests, including a close approximation of Theo's 19 measurements which define the shape and walk of the legs. The back features a hidden hand-grip to make transportation easier. Of course with tiny Theo Jansen figurine!

Check out this small movie with Theo, and a side view of it walking on Youtube.

Enjoy, and vote if you like Strandbeests as much as me! :)

I know Theo is very popular in Japan & S. Korea, if anyone can help me translate this in Japanese or Korean let me know!

    - Who are you?

I'm a 32 year old Industrial Designer from the Netherlands. I have worked with Theo and another friend before on the 3D printed version of his Strandbeests. I have wanted to make a proper Rhinoceros for a loooooong time now. It took me quite some time but when it walked it was sooo worth it! Theo fully supports a Lego Rhinoceros as long as it is truthfull to his work. (This is not a "collaborative as defined in the regulations" project btw)

    - It's BIG! :)

Yes indeed! Smaller might be possible though, but there are a few issues.

    - Right now the space for 1 leg mechanism is 7 studs. We might be able to get this down to 6 or 5 studs, but it will be tight. Maybe a custom part? This space needs to scale down if you want to scale down the whole thing and keep the proportions about the same. The crankshaft needs to be quite sturdy, that's why I went for a robust solution.

    - Also, Theo's 19 lengths for the legs are hard to achieve perfectly (hence the weird angles etc in the legs) and when scaling down these imperfections influence the shape and walk cycle more.

    - No electric engines?!!

Nope! Theo's work is based on propulsion by the wind or by human power. I'm not preventing you from trying though ;)

Watching this creation walk is really incredible, made even more incredible since it uses no electronic engines! A lovely model, truly a work of art.

Best wishes as you continue on your journey to 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO!
