Legolympus (Mythology Theme with Mount Olympus Set)

    created by Kiffington on 2012.05.21

    Main Section
You've built scenes from "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," "Lord of the Rings," and superhero adventures, now build the stories that inspired them all! "Legolympus" is a theme that would bring the legends of Classical Mythology to the LEGO brand.

Granted, Classical Mythology is not an original concept, but it is public domain and widely recognizable and popular to people of all ages throughout the world. Taking its working name from the iconic Mount Olympus that was considered the capitol of Classical Mythology, Legolympus would focus on familiar tales of immortals, heroes, and monsters. This proposed theme could easily be considered a variant on the established Castle and Kingdoms themes, replacing certain medieval elements with Greco-Roman architectural elements (arches, columns, etc.) and outdoor features (mountainsides, caves, trails, etc.).

    Mount Olympus/Mount Legolympus
    - Possible Minifigures: Zeus, King of Legolympus & Lord of Thunder; Hera, Queen of Legolympus; Poseidon, King of the Ocean; Ares, Master of Combat; Athena, Guardian of Wisdom; Aphrodite, Patroness of Love & Beauty; Pan, Protector of Animals; Apollo, Champion of the Sun; Artemis, Supreme Huntress; and/or Atlas, Load-Bearing Titan.

I may have taken some artistic license with the inclusion of Atlas here, but once the idea popped into my head, I couldn't resist it. And, the titles of the characters have been "tweaked" for the sake of this being a line of toys and to prevent the use of words like "god" and "goddess."

    Voyage of the Argo
    - Possible Minifigures: Jason, Hercules, Orpheus, Autolycus, Castor, Pollux, Atalanta, and/or Sirens
    - Features: Trireme-style Boat, Golden Fleece, Island with Sirens

Hercules was deliberately included in only the most minimal way possible. His famous labors and quests could be reserved as a spin-off or follow-up to Legolympus as "The Adventures of Hercules (aka Brickules)".

The thief Autolycus has been listed amongst the crew of the Argo, so the Argonaut pictured above is a wink to the version of Autolycus played by Bruce Campbell in "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" and "Xena: Warrior Princess".

    The Training of Achilles

    - Features: Pegasus Horse, Chimera Monster, etc.

    Labyrinth of the Minotaur
    - Minifigures: Theseus, Daedalus, Minotaur
    - Features: Modular Maze Layout, Traps, etc.

    The Trojan Horse
    - Possible Minifigures: Achilles, Odysseus, Ajax, Hector, Paris, Helen, Greek Soldier(s), and/or Trojan Soldier(s)
    - Features: Trojan Horse, Gate & Ramparts of Troy, Ability to Expand Scene with Greek & Trojan Battle Packs, etc.

    Riddle of the Sphinx Game
    - Minifigure (bonus, not used for gameplay): Oedipus, Sphinx
    - Features: Monster-Building Parts, Monster Instruction Cards

The Riddle of the Sphinx game would be a process-of-elimination guessing game not unlike Guess Who. Given that many mythological monsters were described as being combinations of other animals (i.e. the head of a lion with the body of a goat and the tail of a serpent), builders could mix-and-match their own monsters using available creature pieces.

As for the gameplay, one player would draw a card that would instruct them which monster to build, and the other player would try to guess which card he built by asking various questions like, "Does your monster have wings?" or "Does your monster have the head of a bird?"
