    Game Bases for Minifigures

Have you ever wanted to use a LEGO minifigure as a game piece? I know I always wanted to do that as a kid whenever I was playing any board game. I can't say I've entirely outgrown that, either. The problem has always been getting a LEGO minifigure to stand up on the board. Using a LEGO plate helped, but it never seemed like a good solution. Now that I'm older, and also want to play tabletop battle games or role playing games with a LEGO mini as a placeholder, it's even harder because I need to fit a specific grid space or standard base size.

Well, here is a solution to that problem! This 25mm round base can be produced with 1x2, 2x2, or 2x3 stud patterns so you can build a custom-built game piece.

I used a 3D printer to make a proof-of-concept model shown below, and while it is crude compared to a proper LEGO product, it works. This size is large enough to ensure stability, small enough to leave the game board visible, and the correct diameter to work with many tabletop game systems as well.

But where can it go from here? With the addition of a 30mm pedestal, chess sets can be produced. Themed sets for Star Wars, Castle, Pirates, and more can be made, each with 16 minifigures (half-set), 32 (full), and as a complete kit including a board. The bottom 30mm pedestal can be color-coded, and can be switched from one side to the other at will so no one is required to consider any chess army color-locked.

Since people want to play games using minifigures they already own, these bases could be sold as a standalone product. This would also encourage game stores to stock LEGO as a new product line, so this product would benefit both current LEGO retailers and specialty game shops. The 25mm base could be included with future Minifigures packages, like 8833 Series 8, adding value for the buyer because the minifigures can be used in non-LEGO settings more readily. It also serves as a display base. The 30mm base is slightly smaller than a 4x4 LEGO plate, so it would be easy to place on a LEGO brick chess board, and would also be compatible with most chess boards people may already own.

As I designed them, the 25mm bases would be the height of a standard LEGO plate, while the 30mm pedestal would be equal to two LEGO plates, and the combined height would equal one standard LEGO brick. The 30mm pedestal is drawn with a 2.5mm radius. The piece diameters are not intended for LEGO system compatibility, but for extending the utility of the toys outside the usual realm of LEGO play. However, as noted above, this benefits the existing minifigure products and can also expand the LEGO Games line.
