    Origami Crane 折り鶴

    created by BricksBen on 2013.03.18

    Main Section
Play your part for peace. This origami crane expresses the poignant message of this elegant peace symbol with LEGO® elements, and challenges our notion of what LEGO® can do. This crane is a totally new idea and new category that would make a refreshing addition to the LEGO® range.

    1. A poignant peace symbol.

This LEGO® origami crane was inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadako_Sasaki), a 12-year-old victim of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. In reference to a Japanese legend, where one who folds a thousand origami cranes would be granted a wish, Sadako set out to do so as she lay dying from leukemia in hospital. It is unclear if she managed to complete a thousand cranes before she passed away.

Now children and adults around the world can play their part for peace with LEGO®. The accompanying booklet could present a brief history of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II. This LEGO® origami crane is a poignant peace symbol and a statement against weapons of mass destruction that kills thousands of innocent civilians like Sadako Sasaki.

    2. Challenge what’s possible.

Many people would associate LEGO® with vehicles, buildings and gadgets. Using LEGO® elements to build something that’s traditionally made of paper would make a welcome surprise. This is similar to building a balloon dog out of LEGO® (see www.bricksben.com/balloon-dog) – it’s guaranteed to make people think again about LEGO® as an art medium.

    3. Cool construction.

This LEGO® origami crane features a tilting head and wings that flap up and down. At just 51 pieces it would not be a complex build, with its LEGO®-safe techniques, yet it would still be satisfying enough with some advanced SNOT (studs not on top) construction involved. See the cross-section view with colored bricks. A small groove in the back also makes it possible to hang the crane if desired.

    4. Production made easy.

The small model size means the potential cost is kept low. This design does not require any new LEGO® element molds. There would be no conflict with current LEGO® themes and licenses as this origami crane is a totally new idea.

The inexpensive build and inherent message of peace would make this LEGO® origami crane an attractive bulk order for schools, government agencies and non-government organizations.

This LEGO® origami crane could be presented on its own, or it could be part of a series of related LEGO® peace symbols that could include the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-Bomb_Dome) and the Japanese Peace Bell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Peace_Bell).

Please vote for this origami crane! Thank you.

    Best wishes,
