    Lego Companion Cube

    created by GreenShade on 2012.02.16

    Main Section
So this is a custom Lego (compatible) piece I made.
The Companion Cube from the game Portal/Portal2.
This is just a quick render, it will be 3D printed.
Each side of this cube is 2x2 unit. It also can be used as a converter or reverser.

But I need to test it first!
    (Unexpected Portal joke...)

I will update this entry, when the prototype arrives.
    What do you think?
    Do you like this concept?
    It's also on MOCpages

    UPDATE

    [Aperture Science theme]

    CAVE JOHNSON here.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I've got some good news and some bad news.
The good news is the Weighted Companion Cube prototype has finally arrived.
Except it's not weighted. It's actually light. And hollow.
But it's just a prototype man! Prototypes must have some errors!
Science was invented, to solve problems. If we wouldn't be able to create problems, we wouldn't be able to solve anything.

    And now the bad news.
Do you still remember the errors, I was talked about?
    We've got some others too.
This cube is not exactly perfectly fits to the other Lego pieces.
Now I will do two things.
First: I'm giving you some pictures about the problems.
Second: I'm going to give some headache to the man, who's responsible for this... thing.

    Caroline likes it anyways.

    Cave Johnson. We're done here.

Let's see what we got here...
Side note: right now I'm lacking test subjects in orange jumpsuit, so I had to use some other "volunteers".
Other side note: I never thought this black base plates which come with the minifigures would be actually useful.

Since it was printed the surface is a bit rough. There is a smoother white plastic, but this was cheaper.
There's one thing I don't understand: during the manufacturing one of the sides (either the top or the bottom) somehow become dented. I have to ask them if they can do something about it. Otherwise it's just a minor problem.

The first thing what needs redesign is the stud, because it's too small (tenth of a millimeter size difference, nothing stays on it).
The red bricks are actually a bit forced there, they fits too tightly.
But the holes and the handles are perfect.

The other problem is the assembly needs glue, otherwise they fall apart.
Ideally it would made of one piece, but then it would be difficult to clear th inside of the cube properly. I don't want to make it solid, because the prize is based on the volume of the material, so the hollow is better.
